A democratic leader in Iowa shares her stance on a potential candidate filling a vacancy for a special election at the end of the year.

According to District 14 Senator Sarah Trone-Garriott, a special election will be coming up on December 30th after former District 16 Senator Claire Celsi recently passed away. She says the district is largely democratic, and believes that the chances are high that another democratic candidate will succeed Celsi.

Trone-Garriott reveals that when she was first elected, District 16 was where she started out before moving to District 14 in 2022, which is primarily Dallas County. She hopes whoever takes that seat will represent the district well.

“And that means having legislators who show up, who listen, who speak out on behalf of their constituents, who are accessible, and who are there to help, and that’s what every district deserves. You should know who those folks are, because you’re going to see them in the grocery store, you should feel welcome to reach out and share your concerns with them. But then also when you run into problems, they are there to help, and they often can help. And so, please know who they are because that helps you use your voice, and it helps you get access to the support that you need.”

Trone-Garriott stresses that the election committee will have to be persistent about getting people out to vote, since the challenge is the election will interfere with the holidays, being right between Christmas and New Year’s.
