The Perry Community School Board met in regular session on Monday.
Approximately 15 people spoke out during the open forum section relating to the high school’s fall play of “She Kills Monsters: Young Adventures Edition” being postponed due to inappropriate content in the production. Several students, parents, and staff members voiced concerns about why the play wasn’t closely monitored by administrators before making a quick decision to push it back. Other individuals said that the play shouldn’t have been approved in the first place and was appalled at how it got so far into the process. The board was not allowed to respond in the open forum, but did make public comments towards the end of the meeting, expressing sadness that some members didn’t feel supported in the drama department and are committed to showing a better understanding in the future.
Items on the agenda that the board approved included Virtual Learning Day expectations, consortium 28E Agreement contracts with Grandwood Learning Center and Woodward Academy all for the current school year. Also, the board accepted the Iowa Association of School Boards’ Stop the Prop Program, an agreement with Timberline Billing Service LLC, a contract for a bus driver for the Success Center, accepting early graduations for six high school students, and a resolution to transfer $335,613.35 of funds to the Flexibility Account within the General Fund.
The board also set a date of December 15th for a public hearing on the Perry Elementary School Improvement project bid review.
