Veteran Perry swimming coach Jean Dowd knows the community will be well represented over in Eastern Iowa later today. Dowd will guide the Jayettes to Iowa City for the opening round of state swimming. The state meet is broadcast over the Iowa Girls Athletic Union website, and a familiar Perry voice will once again be calling the action.
“Don Spellman, a Perry native, has been calling the state meet for years,” states Dowd. “He brings a ton of energy, a wealth of knowledge and really does a nice job calling the action.”
Spellman swam for Perry back in the day and several Spellman’s have followed course in the pool, both for the Summer Swim team and the high school team. Don is a former University of Nevada Las Vegas, WDM Dowling Catholic (IA) High School, Perry (IA) High School, DMSF, and Iowa City Eels – Masters swimmer. During his competive age-group years Don qualfied for Zones and Junior National competitions. Don was a five time silver medalist, three time bronze medalist, and 11 time Top 8 finisher at United States Masters Swimming (USMS) National Championships (BR and IM events).
