Greene County Middle School was briefly evacuated after a report of a possible gas leak.
According to Superintendent Brett Abbotts, on Friday, the middle school staff reported the smell of the odor of gas, and with the safety and health of the students and staff, the administration made the decision to evacuate the building. He says their gas line provider, Alliant Energy, was brought in to inspect the suspected area.
Abbotts explains that after about 25 minutes, the all clear was given and everyone was allowed to re-enter the building safely and students were able to eat their lunch, according to their normal schedules. He believes the students did a tremendous job of taking the temporary evacuation seriously, while moving quickly and calmly. He is proud that the staff responded efficiently and ensured all of the proper protocols were followed.
Abbotts expresses his gratitude for the immediate response by Alliant Energy as well, and that the students were able to continue with the rest of the school day, resuming normal activities.
