Perry-area veterans were honored with a special ceremony on Sunday.

The Perry Piecemakers Quilt Guild awarded Quilts of Valor to 10 veterans at the Perry Elks Lodge.

Pat Mundy, with the Perry Piecemakers, shared a history of the Quilts of Valor Foundation during Sunday’s ceremony. The quilts, created by guild members, were awarded to veterans representing the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy. The honorees included Gary Anderson, John Kastner, Rick Ridihalgh, Darrell Meinecke, Teddy Barr, Steven Altman, Christopher Roberts, Brett McLain and LeRoy Hameister.

Barb Hansen, also with the Perry Piecemakers, read information about each veteran’s service before welcoming them home.

“With the wrapping of this Quilt of Valor, may it provide comfort knowing that the nation is thankful for your sacrifice, service and valor you provided in serving our nation.”

Mundy also presented six veterans with a special pin commemorating their service during the Vietnam War.

“Most of us get particularly warmed by the response of our veterans that went through the Vietnam Era. They have been totally forgotten and not treated in an appropriate manner. We try, by wrapping them in this quilt, to give them some closure and some comfort that they very well deserve.”

Mundy added that the Perry Piecemakers have awarded around 80 quilts to area veterans this year. She encourages community members to nominate veterans to receive Quilts of Valor next year. Forms are located at the front desk of the Hotel Pattee in Perry.
