The State of Iowa has many hunting seasons currently open.
Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Jeremy King says that we are currently in the second season of many migratory bird species, including ducks, dark and light geese, snipes, and doves. He adds that there are some non-migratory game birds that are in season as well, even though they are more popular at a different time of the year.
“Guthrie County will typically have a harvest reported between 20 and 30 fall turkey. So it is something where people buy a tag case you’re sitting in a tree stand hunting deer and you had an opportunity to turkey. Well, then you have a tag available and you can try to take that shot. So this is something that is, like I said, not super popular, but there are folks out there doing it.”
King mentions that other non-migratory birds that are in season include rooster pheasants, bobwhite quail, and gray partridge. He adds that other animals that are currently in season to hunt are cottontail rabbits, fox and gray squirrels, groundhogs, crows, pigeons and coyotes. King shares that it is also early deer archery season, and that there are also several species of furbearing animals that can currently be trapped. He encourages individuals to always check rules and regulations for hunting and trapping before doing so.
