West Central Valley Wrestlers Willow Ray and Rhowen Miller reveal how they get into their mindset prior to a match.

Miller shares that she began wrestling when she was four years old, which she was introduced to by her father. On the other hand, Ray outlines that Miller signed her up without her knowledge five years ago, but she quickly fell in love with the sport. Both girls explain that they enjoy doing shot techniques against their opponents. Miller focuses on her plan of attack before she takes to the mat.

“I just think about what my takedowns are going to be (and) hand combinations, things that I can do throughout the matches (and) what I can do better for my last match in between them.”

For Ray, her strategy is to keep her mind empty prior to a match.

“I usually just try my best not to think, otherwise I will overthink too much and probably get into my head. So I usually just keep my headphones on and keep to myself.”

In terms of personal goals, Miller would love to make it to the state meet, as she was only one place away last season. Then Ray was the first female state wrestling qualifier in the Wildcats history, and details that it would mean the world to mark a spot on the podium.

West Central Valley will participate in their third wrestling meet of the season at Manson Northwest Webster High School on Monday, beginning at 5pm.
