The Greene County wrestling team is low on the number of participants in the practice room, but not when it comes to coaching experience. Zach Beekman is in his second stint heading the program and assistant coach Mark Sawhill is back after decades as both as head coach and assistant in the Rams’ program.

Beekman has coached on both the middle school and high school levels for Greene County. His first stint as head coach coincided with the years McKinley Robbins and Kale Petersen wrestled here. Robbins won two State titles and finished second twice while Petersen never lost a match for the Rams in his two seasons at Greene County, where he won two of his three individual State championships.

Sawhill was Tom Ball’s longtime assistant before taking over the top spot when Ball stepped down. He coached numerous State place winners and qualifiers and was the head coach the last time the Rams won Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tournament titles.

The Rams open the 2025-26 season next week and leading the way are a trio of juniors with State Meet experience. Degan Miller finished fifth in Class 2A at 165 lbs. in Feb., while twins Brennan (106) and Jaron Jacobs (113)  finished outside the top eight, but both won State Tournament matches.
