fire-hydrant-in-snow

Following the most recent winter storm, Jefferson residents saw several inches of snowfall and there is one aspect that some property owners may forget to do.

Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams says those residents that have fire hydrants on their easements are required to dig at least a four foot area around fire hydrants. He explains that every second counts when they are on scene of a fire.

“One, we might not be able to get the hoses connected without having to take the time to dig it out ourselves, and then you could lose a structure pretty quickly. Especially in the winter with the cold, we have to have a constant supply of water to make sure our trucks don’t freeze up.”

Williams appreciates everyone’s compliance with this requirement by Iowa Code.
