Donald was born January 6, 1939 to Mearl and Fern (Sindt) Pottroff on the family farm 9 ½ miles NE of Glidden. He graduated from Glidden-Ralston High School in 1956. Donald started farming immediately after graduation with his father and brother-in-law Lawrence Krause, PPK FARMS. Farming was what he loved to do. Farming was his life and he believed in good conservation farming practices.
Donald was married Jean Turner on September 12, 1964. They lived at Ralston for 5 years and had two children, Daniel and Diana. The family later moved to a farm 10 miles north of Glidden where they lived until 1982 when they moved to their current residence one half mile north of the home place. Donald served in the National Guard for 6 years. He was very community minded and served on the Glidden REC board, the West Central Coop Board, and was a Jasper Township Trustee for many years.  Donald was a member of the Glidden United Methodist Church where he served on many church boards and Haggai Masonic Lodge # 369 of Glidden.  Donald enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and playing cards. Donald suffered from macular degeneration in 2008. He didn’t let that stop his love for farming. He retired from farming in 2025. He continued to help with planting and harvesting where he could. He could be found farming in his trusty RANGER. He enjoyed watching the next generation take over the farming operation.
Donald is survived by his wife Jean of 61 years; son Daniel Pottroff (Denise) of Glidden, daughter Diana Pickup (Calvin) of Monument, CO; four grandchildren: Sara Pickup, C.J. Pickup (Mattison), Matthew Pottroff (Jess Pounds), Bethany Rojo (Alonso); four great-grandchildren: Catalina, Sebastian, Luciana, and Olivia; two nephews; one niece; and other relatives and friends.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-laws, his brother-in-law Lawrence Krause, sister Phyllis Antofer (Anthony), and nephews Larry Krause and Delwin Krause.
