The Mustangs girls’ varsity basketball team took to the court against the Ames Little Cyclones on Monday night and emerged victorious with a 59-36 win.

The girls jumped out in front to an early lead because of big quarters by junior Macy Meyer and sophomore Ava Smid. Meyer dropped eight points on a layup and a pair of threes while Smid got to work in the painted area for six points on two hook shots and a free throw.

A big second quarter from Ames saw them score 15 points to close the deficit to 29-19. Two late threes in the quarter by Little Cyclone freshman Parker Bivins on back-to-back possessions kept Ames close.

It was a strong second half defensively for DCG as they held the Little Cyclones to less than ten points in each of the final two quarters. Senior Leah Brauch and Smid each dropped nine points in the half to end with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Brauch’s 16 was a season high. Meyer finished her night leading the team with 17.

With the win, the Mustangs climb to 5-0 to start the year. The girls will be in action next in Newton on Friday night with tip-off at 6 pm.
