Greene County Adopt-A-Family is nearing the end of its donation period for this year’s Holiday Food Baskets, but the organizer says they will take money anytime.
Sherry Graven says about 160 families have signed up to receive boxes of food that are mostly kid-friendly, with the goal of helping those households in need during the two weeks of winter break when youth don’t have school, which has gotten harder to do recently, with the ever growing prices of food.
“And mainly, we’re trying to buy stuff that the kids can fix themselves as their parents are either unable to help them or are working. So that tends to be a little more expensive too, but we try to do stuff that kids can really like and do themselves.”
Graven details that on Friday, a group of students from Greene County High School help sort and arrange the food baskets at Clover Hall, to prepare for the drive-thru distribution that takes place on Saturday morning.
“And I always enjoy that part because the kids are so excited, and they’re such good workers, and they can get it done so fast. And I just enjoy showing them that they need to help their community. You know, that’s our youth and that’s who’s going to be here as we get older and we need to figure out a way to make sure that they know that volunteering is the best thing.”
Graven appreciates everyone’s financial support for this endeavor and she adds that Greene County Adopt-A-Family accepts monetary donations anytime at P.O. Box 364 in Jefferson.
