Getting ready for the Holiday Food Basket distribution/Coltrane Carlson-Raccoon Valley Radio

On Saturday, 160 Greene County families were given generous food donations to help them get through the holiday season.

Sherry Graven is with Greene County Adopt-A-Family and has organized the Holiday Food Baskets for several years. Facing the increasing grocery prices, making it tougher on her to get food for the families, she explained that her drive and inspiration are about supporting the kids and families during a challenging time when students are on winter break. She said she also finds strength in her faith.

“Truthfully, I pray about it. I just ask the lord to provide what he wants to provide for these children and these families. The community is just so generous and so giving, and it is just amazing how they continue every year to support this really, really important program.”

Graven also appreciated the volunteers, both on Friday getting food put into boxes, to Saturday’s crew that sorted and distributed to the families as they drove by Clover Hall on the Greene County Fairgrounds.

“I have a group of volunteers, a lot of them have been there year after year and now they’re bringing their families and helping. And it takes a lot of people to fill all those boxes, and fill the vehicles with the food, and so I always appreciate all of the volunteers, they’re just great. I just have the best volunteers around.

Graven would like to request from the public to make monetary donations throughout the year, because Greene County Adopt-A-Family not only does the Holiday Food Baskets, they also help with winter clothing items, with the Warm Hearts Clothing Drive in October. Make checks payable to Greene County Adopt-A-Family and the donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 364 in Jefferson.
