An annual holiday tradition is returning tomorrow in Perry.

Co-Organizer Larry Meacham says community members can enjoy a free meal of pork loin, turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, dressing, rolls, salads and desserts from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Perry Elks Lodge.

Co-Organizer Deb Miller explains that it’s truly a community meal as the main food items are donated by local businesses while the salads and desserts are provided by local churches and organizations.

“I always say it takes a village to put on this dinner. We appreciate everybody who helps. It’s hard to thank everybody, but we’re so grateful for every one of you.”

Meacham adds that they wouldn’t have been able to carry on the annual tradition without the support from the community.

“I don’t know if we ever expected it to go on for 20 years, but when you see how much people do appreciate it at the end of the day, you kind of know that you have to do it again if you possibly can. And we’ve been fortunate enough to get the cooperation that we need from all the volunteers and other groups to be able to continue it.”

While the meal is completely free, Meacham says a free-will offering will be taken for those wishing to donate. All of the funds will then be given to the Perry Area Food Pantry.

Miller encourages Perry and surrounding residents to come early as they served around 500 last year.

“Please come out and join the crowd because it’s so fun to see your friends and socialize. We have folks who come for the dinner at 11 a.m. and they stay the whole day.”

Meacham adds that carryout and delivery options are also available by calling the Perry Elks Lodge, 515-465-3791, today or after 10 a.m. tomorrow.
