The Perry Fire Department responded to a house fire on Tuesday afternoon that resulted in injuries to the homeowner and several dogs perished.

According to Perry Fire Chief Grason Hill, the department was dispatched to 1726 Otley Avenue around 12:30 p.m. He added that it was called by a firefighter as they saw smoke coming from the house while driving down the street.

Hill said the fire was located on the front side of the house in the living room.

While attempting to gain entry through the front door, Hill detailed that they were informed about a possible occupant in the home, along with five dogs. He added that firefighters gained access through the rear of the home and found the dogs near the back door, where only one survived.

Hill explained that the house was completely full of smoke. After using a fan to clear some of the smoke, firefighters located and evacuated the homeowner. Dallas County Emergency Medical Services then transported her to Dallas County Hospital for smoke inhalation. Hill believed that the individual was taken by helicopter to another medical facility, but that another firefighter told him she was doing okay.

Hill detailed that once the smoke cleared, firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to make sure there weren’t any hotspots on either floor.

Hill said the cause of the blaze is likely electrical. He stated that while there may have been flames initially, by the time the department arrived on scene it was a smoldering fire in the living room.

Among the agencies that responded include the Bouton and Perry Fire Departments, Perry Police Department, Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and Dallas County EMS.

Tuesday afternoon’s fire was the third in a week as the Perry Fire Department was previously called out on Monday evening for a blaze at 516 Grove Street and on December 22 for one at El Rey Market.
