The city of Scranton is seeing a project that started this past summer nearing completion for an amenity.

Greene County Development Corporation Director Greg Piklapp says the Casey’s General Store, along Iowa Highway 25 in Scranton, is finishing off a $500,000 renovation, after the former GCDC Interim Director Michelle Book helped the convenience store and gas station company make the decision to go forward with the improvements.

“And it was one of those things that, ‘Hey, this was a high priority for the city and council to start focusing on to provide services for the employees of New Way (Scranton Manufacturing).’ It was one of those things too is like, we didn’t really know if Casey’s was aware of it because it’s usually one of those things of, unless it’s front row center and brought to their attention, ‘We’ll get to it when we get to it.’”

Piklapp states that GCDC is also helping with Peoples Bank in Scranton to look at moving near the Casey’s location as well as a possible transition later on toward the downtown area. He explains the importance of grouping potential economic development projects together like what is being planned for in Scranton.

“So it’s just one of those things of all these things are happening in parallel, if we don’t do them side-by-side it’s just going to be a slow drip instead of a steady stream.”

Piklapp adds that the renovation for Casey’s included increased food prep, cooler space and retail area to allow for more foot traffic.
