Those looking to see snakes up-close or get outdoors to search for owls can join the Dallas County Conservation Board for a pair of programs on Monday.

Outreach Coordinator Jeni Baker says Snakes, Snakes, Snakes! will be held from 10-11 a.m. Monday at Forest Park Museum and Arboretum, 14581 K Avenue, Perry.

She details that while snakes that live outdoors are tucked away for the winter, the conservation board’s education animals are ready to teach. Baker adds that participants can meet the scaly serpents in the warmth of the Forest Park Museum and learn more about the reptiles that call Dallas County home.

The conservation board will switch gears to owls Monday afternoon. Baker says the Voas Owl Prowl will be held from 1-3 p.m. at Voas Nature Area, 19286 Lexington Road, Minburn.

She adds that while common owls in Iowa can be located at night by mimicking their calls, the uncommon owls are found during the day roosting in cedar trees. Baker explains that participants will venture off-trail looking for pellets, whitewash and feathers.

While the program is free, Baker encourages residents to register through DCCB’s Eventbrite page.
