DCG girls basketball took the opener by a score of 76-48 to begin the evening, but the boys dropped a close game 53-46 on the back end to wrap up Friday night hoops.
The girls got out to a great start and never looked back, winning wire-to-wire over #14 Pella. Macy Meyer had ten points at the half, thanks to an eight-point second quarter. She didn’t stop there and finished her night with 19 points to lead all scorers. Ava Smid exploded out of the locker room at halftime for a 14-point third quarter and ended with 18. Juniors Tessa Jones and Addie Abens dropped 11 and 10 points, marking four starters in double digits as the Mustangs blew out the Dutch 76-48.
The boys followed with their game against #5 Pella, and it was nip-and-tuck throughout. Each team started slow with eight first-quarter points, then the offense woke up. Dutch senior Austin Schulte had a seven-point second to lead all scorers at the break. Luke Lorenzen had five to lead DCG to within four, 23-19, at the half. Chase Perrin came out of the break with a ten-point third quarter, and Lorenzen had six to even things up at 35 all going into the final period. The Mustangs struggled from the floor, however, and Schulte put in eight points to end his night with 16 points to lead all scorers, defeating DCG 53-46.
With the win, the girls go to 11-2(5-1), and the boys fall to 6-4(3-2). Mustangs basketball will be in action Monday night with the boys hosting the Ankeny Centennial Jaguars at 7:30 pm. You can catch the game on KDLS 99.7 FM, 1310 AM, and on raccoonvalleyradio.com.
