The first of two nights celebrating the Greene County High School Athletic Hall of Fame weekend was Friday when the Class of 2026 inductees were introduced to the home basketball crowd in Jefferson. The Rams hosted Grand View Christian (Des Moines) in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play with the Thunder winning both games, 68-35 in the girls’ contest and 50-35 in the boys. The Rams are now 5-9, 3-7 in the girls’ conference and the boys are 3-11 overall and 2-8 in conference play. GVC girls are 10-3, 7-3 and the boys are 6-6, 6-4.
GVC made an astounding 18 shots from three-point range and did not attempt a single free throw. Senior Maiah Murphy and 24 points and six baskets from long range. Freshman Sophie Bird canned five from three-point range and made 17 points while senior Addie Hackett made 15 points on five three pointers. The leading scorer for Greene County was junior Sara Morlan with 10 points including the Rams only three-point basket. Junior Makenna Ebersole scored eight points with six each from seniors Kaycee Pittman and Becca Anderson.
Greene County’s boys trailed 20-6 at the end of the first quarter and were down 31-14 at intermission. The Rams closed the gap to 10 points in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer. Senior Teagan Chisholm led the Rams with 14 points and junior Zack Stalder added eight points. The Rams will be without leading scorer Broc Stream the rest of the season due to tearing knee ligaments earlier this month vs. West Marshall (State Center), but hope to get second leading scorer Lincoln Schwander, a junior, back before long.
The HOF Class consists of Bob Allen, (football) Jefferson-Scranton Class of 1998, Junior Gutierres, (soccer), Greene County 2020, Jeremy Thompson (baseball) J-S ’98, plus two State Champion relays in girls’ track and field. Tonight’s event starts at 6 o’clock with a reception that is free and open to the public in the Commons area at the high school in Jefferson. At 6:30, the induction ceremony will begin in the Auditorium.
