Now that the 2026 Legislative session has kicked off, one state lawmaker details the committees she will be serving on this year.

District 14 Senator Sarah Trone-Garriott is the ranking Democrat on Health and Human Services.

“That means I have a leadership role on issues of healthcare, mental health, food assistance, foster care, all kinds of really important issues that impact the healthcare services that we receive here in the state.”

Trone-Garriott is also a member of the Education committee, which she says will be looking at issues related to public and private schools.

She invites Iowans to get in touch with their legislators as the session continues.

“One thing that I really love about being a state legislator and the work that we do is we have an opportunity to bring the public into the process. The state legislative process is built around having the public involved. It works better when we have the public’s voice in it.”

Trone-Garriott encourages residents to find out who their legislators are and to share what issues matter to them.
