A Jefferson man is in custody following an alleged incident where he is accused of attempted murder.

According to court documents, Jefferson Police responded to the scene of two vehicles that had damage to them near the intersection of North Mulberry and East Central Streets at 8:21pm on Friday, January 23rd. Court documents state that the victim was found in one of the vehicles and was taken to Greene County Medical Center for treatment of possible injuries. The other driver, 45-year-old Christopher Lawrence, was not in the disabled gray SUV, when officers arrived on scene.

Court documents show that officers learned the vehicle Lawrence was driving was stolen from a family member and police later received a tip that he was at another residence on East Perry Street. The criminal complaint states that a witness claimed Lawrence demanded that he drive him to another residence on North High Street. While officers drove to that address, they saw Lawrence and he fled on foot. The affidavit reports that officers eventually caught up to him and took him into custody. Officers also noticed an odor coming from Lawrence and his behavior was consistent with methamphetamine use while at the Greene County Medical Center. Court documents state that Lawrence admitted to using methamphetamine four to five hours before he assaulted the victim with the stolen vehicle he was driving, but he did not submit a urine test while at the medical center.

The court documents show that the victim told officers that Lawrence spoke to her the day before and told her he would kill her if she talked to law enforcement and anyone else about what happened to her. Lawrence claimed he saw the victim on Friday at a business with another man and the victim stated that Lawrence was following behind her vehicle after she left. The victim was too scared to stop her vehicle and when she was on the phone with a family member, the victim said Lawrence started ramming his vehicle into hers, for a total of six times until the SUV he was driving was disabled.

Lawrence was charged with a Class B Felony for attempted murder, two Class D Felonies for willful injury-causing bodily injury and third or subsequent offense for domestic abuse assault, four aggravated misdemeanors for assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, driving while barred, his second OWI and operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent; a serious misdemeanor for leaving the scene of an accident with an injury and a simple misdemeanor for reckless driving.
