Leah Brauch leads the charge with 22 points as the Mustangs stampede into Ankeny to take down the Hawks 65-57 on Monday night.
In the first quarter, Macy Meyer came off the blocks hot with seven points, and Ava Smid followed with five as DCG jumped out to an early 19-14 lead.
In quarter two, it was the Leah Brauch show. The senior drained four threes in the quarter and five in the half. She went 5-6 from downtown in the opening half of basketball, leading all scorers. Jayla Williams of Ankeny had 10 to keep the Hawks within striking distance, 35-24 at the intermission.
In the third quarter, Ankeny began to fight back. Williams had eight in the quarter while DCG bought into scoring by committee. Five different Mustangs got into the scoresheet in the frame. The Mustangs still had the lead 51-39 going into the final quarter.
It was a ferocious fourth as Ankeny came out firing. Williams kept dropping in buckets while Reagan Baldwin and Kyla Schaapveld knocked down shots from long range. DCG did just enough to stave off the comeback effort with Addie Abens getting five clutch points, and Tessa Jones had four, including a three-pointer, as the Mustangs emerged from the Hawks’ nest victorious, 65-57.
With the win, DCG goes to 13-2 on the season. The girls will be in action tonight against the Newton Cardinals with the boys following them in a doubleheader at the Meadows Main Gym. Tipoff for the girls is set for 6 pm. You can catch the action on KDLS2 and raccoonvalleyradio.com.
