The Mustangs girls wrestling team traveled to Glenwood High School for the right to wrestle at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa, in the state tournament.
The top two wrestlers in each weight class would qualify for the state tournament, and the Mustangs had four girls in the top two in their weight class. Nia Kiley pinned her opponent in the championship round in just under four minutes and became the first DCG wrestler to punch her ticket to state. Georgia Edwards, Addyson Bowers, and Baylie Van Der Molen were up next and earned third place on the podium but just barely missed out on a state berth.
In the 145, Jenah Gray lost in the semis but performed well to earn a second-place finish and make her way to state. Ahsytyn Jahangir pinned each of her opponents all the way to the final round but was defeated and her chance at state came down to the second-place match. She quickly pinned her opponent in 22 seconds to leave no doubt that she is state-worthy. Finally, in the 190 class, Aubrey Borcherding received a bye, then pinned both of her next two competitors to win the weight class and punch her ticket to state.
The first rounds of the tournament are on Thursday, February 4th, beginning at 4:30 pm.
