February is American Heart Month, and an expert from the Dallas County Health Department offers tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Community Health Educator Natalie Del Vecchio says that heart disease is the leading cause of death both in Dallas County and across the United States. She adds that it doesn’t always come with obvious warning signs, so it’s important to know the risk factors.
Del Vecchio details that some of those factors include having high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, and having a family history of heart disease.
She recommends having a healthier heart lifestyle would include eating more fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins, staying active, managing stress and getting enough sleep.
“American Heart Month is just a great reminder that heart health isn’t about one big change. It’s about looking at those small everyday choices that add up over time. Moving a little bit more throughout the day, or just every once in a while, swapping a sugary soda for water, these little things add up and can make a big difference for your heart.”
Del Vecchio details that it’s also important to keep up with regular check-ups, monitor blood pressure and cholesterol numbers and take any medications as prescribed.
