The Norwalk Warriors scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, and Tillman Papcun ended with 19, including a buzzer-beater three to take down DCG, 48-46, on Tuesday night.
The two teams started slow offensively, just trying to feel each other out in the first quarter. Hudson Heidgerken knocked down a three and pulled up from the free-throw line to get five in the frame. Norwalk caught fire from long range in the first as four different Warriors hit from outside to take a 14-10 lead.
In the second quarter, Chase Perrin put the Mustangs on his back. He drained two threes, the latter a four-point play off a foul, and ended the quarter with all of DCG’s 9 points. On the defensive end, they only allowed two buckets from the Warriors, as it was 20-19 going to the break.
In the second half, it was more excellent defense from DCG as they held Norwalk to under ten points for the second consecutive quarter. On the offensive end, six different DCG players scored as they took a 35-28 lead to the final eight minutes.
In the fourth quarter, Papcun led the Warrior comeback. He had 7 points early in the quarter while Perrin drained two more threes and a layup to keep DCG in front. After 31 thrilling minutes of basketball, it all came down to the final 60 seconds. Off a critical Mustangs turnover, Papcun ripped the nylon on a stepback three to cut the DCG lead to one. Off a couple missed Mustangs free throws, Papcun caught the dribble hand-off and launched a three in the waning seconds of the game and banked in the buzzer beater to lift the Warriors to a 48-46 win.
With the loss, DCG drops to 8-7(4-4). The boys will look to get back on track Friday night as they welcome in Indianola to the Meadows Main Gym.
