The Mustangs boys wrestling team traveled to Coralville for the state team dual tournament at the Xtream Arena on Saturday, where they made it to the consolation finals, but were beaten by Linn-Mar, 44-31.
They started their competition in the quarter finals against Dowling Catholic. The Maroons began winning seven of the first eight matches. DCG fought back with Cole Hemmingsen, Brayden Crosser, Kellen Wegner, and Kade Krause winning via fall, and Tyde Nelson winning by major decision, but it was not enough to overcome the early blitz from Dowling, and the Mustangs fell, 52-26.
In their first round in the consolation bracket, DCG matched up with Pleasant Valley for a back-and-forth battle. Hemmingsen, Crosser, and Nelson won by fall, while Noah Kerndt pinned his opponent as well, and the Mustangs emerged victorious 35-32.
In the consolation finals, Quinn Harris started things off with a pin in under 30 seconds, but it was Linn-Mar leaning on DCG afterwards. Jackson Murray got a pin to interrupt a string of Lions wins, but the Mustangs couldn’t rally and dropped the bout 44-31 to place 6th overall as a team in the tournament.
Southeast Polk finished atop the competition in first place for the third year in a row. Up next for DCG is districts at Ankeny High School on Saturday, February 14th.
