A few bills making their way through legislation last week looked at helping take precautions regarding Iowa’s rising cancer rates.

Representative for House District 23 Ray Sorensen says that Governor Reynolds introduced a bill that would increase taxes on tobacco and vaping products. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio his thoughts on the bill.

“The rise in youth vaping is a real concern, and I appreciate the governor focusing on prevention. At the same time, whenever we talk about rising taxes, we have to consider the impact on working families and small businesses. My approach is straightforward. If we act, it should genuinely deter youth use without creating unintended consequences.”

Sorensen mentions the second of the two bills, House File 254, looks to restrict teen access to tanning beds without parent consent. He adds that the bill is a straightforward measure that focuses on safety and parental awareness.
