A Jefferson woman was recently sentenced to several years of probation for a drug-related incident.
According to court documents, 25-year-old Melanie Smith pled guilty to a Class D Felony for gathering where methamphetamine was used. She had a five year prison sentence suspended and was placed on probation for two years with the Iowa Department of Correctional Services. She was additionally sentenced to two years of probation for violating a previous probation from another conviction, which was to be served concurrently, as well as another two years of probation for another conviction of possession of a controlled substance violation, which was to be served consecutively for a total of four years.
The felony charge stems from an executed search warrant that was done on September 6, 2025 by the Jefferson Police Department from an investigation where the smell of marijuana was coming from a home. Several drug-related items were recovered, including methamphetamine and over 11 grams of marijuana.
Court documents show that Smith was also ordered to pay over $800 in court costs and court-appointed attorney fees. As per the plea agreement, a serious misdemeanor for possession of controlled substance violation was dismissed.
