The City of Perry recently approved the first reading of zoning ordinances for two apartment proposals.

The ordinances would change the zoning district from agricultural and light industrial to residential multi-family for two apartment proposals, with one located near Iowa Street and the other on 3rd Street.

Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson says the developers approached the city about potential apartment and townhome projects. He adds that the developers are going after tax credits and one of the requirements for their applications is making sure the property they’re looking at is properly zoned.

Though Peterson details that the application process is a competitive one.

“Hopefully looking forward to the outcome of those applications. It’s a very, very competitive application through the state. There’s only a handful of awards and the state really tries to spread that geographically across the state as much as possible.”

Peterson adds that there is a third developer looking at another apartment proposal for a property that is already zoned multi-family residential. Though he explains that with the competitiveness of the program, it would be unlikely that more than one would receive funding through the state.

Peterson says the second and possibly third readings of the ordinances will be held during the next Perry City Council meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the Clarion Room in the Security Bank Building, due to the President’s Day holiday.
