The Mustangs basketball teams balled out in Pella, with both teams winning their games and the girls earning co-champion honors in the Little Hawkeye.
The girls were up first on Friday night and exploded out of the gate. They held the Pella Dutch to single digits in points in the first half while scoring 13 in the first quarter, then 16 in the second. It was more crushing DCG defense as they cruised to a 53-26 win to end the season tied with Norwalk atop the Little Hawkeye conference. That is six seasons in a row that the Mustangs have held a share of the conference title.
The boys were up next in a big test at #4 Pella. The two teams were in the midst of an offensive explosion in the first quarter. DCG scored 28 points in the first frame while Pella had 23. Things cooled down some in the second as the Dutch pulled within one, 39-38 at the half. In the third quarter, it was the two teams trading blows as Pella evened the score at 52 going into the fourth. It was a fantastic final quarter as the Mustangs continued the trend of their last few games and pulled away late, leaning on timely shooting and good defense to secure a 74-65 upset win at Pella.
The girls finish their season tied with Norwalk at 19-2(11-1) to be called co-champions of the Little Hawkeye conference. With the win, the boys go to 12-7(7-4) with a massive upset victory over the Dutch. The girls are in action one week from today in substate and the boys play Monday in Ankeny.
