DCG boys wrestling made their way to the home of the Hawks in Ankeny for the Class 3A district one regionals and stampeded through to send eight of their wrestlers to the state tournament at Casey’s Center.
The top three wrestlers in their respective weight classes qualify. Quinn Harris kicked off the competition for the Mustangs in the 106, working his way through the consolation bracket to the second-place match before losing by fall to make third place. His teammates, Ryne Nelson in the 175 and Connor Stolpe in the 215, followed suit as all three qualified for state.
In the 120, Noah Kerndt was the only DCG wrestler to make second place, dropping the last match by tech fall but still qualifying for the tournament. Avery Van Zelderen in the 132 became the first Mustang to earn first and punch his ticket to state in a close 5-4 decision. Cole Hemmingsen came up later and rolled through with a tech fall in the semis and a fall in the finals to claim first.
Later in the night, Kellen Wegner won three bouts in the 215, the last by major decision, to pave his yellow brick road to the Casey’s Center. Finally, Lucas Sholl in the heavyweight division bruised his competition on his way to a major decision to rumble into state.
The state tournament for individual wrestlers begins Wednesday, February 18th from downtown Des Moines inside the Casey’s Center.
