A Scranton man who burned down a home in Churdan in 2023, at the owner’s request, was recently sentenced to probation.

According to court documents, 29-year-old Logan Graizer pled guilty to a Class C Felony for second degree arson and a Class D Felony for fraudulent submission to insurer. He had a ten year and a five year prison sentence suspended, respectively, and was placed on probation for a total of three years with the Iowa Department of Correctional Services.

The charges stem from an incident that happened on October 2, 2023. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office investigated a house fire that was owned by Conner Groves that was determined to be suspicious. Court documents show that Groves and Graizer were the two people responsible for burning down the home in Churdan and falsely reporting to the insurance company that everything that Groves owned was lost in the fire, when evidence showed those items were taken out of the home before it was set on fire.

County Attorney Thomas Laehn said the reasons for the joint recommendation between the County Attorney’s Office and the defense attorney for probation was because Graizer has minimal criminal history, he burned down Groves’ house at her request, and Groves was the mastermind behind the arson and she alone stood to gain financially from the false insurance claim.

Graizer and Groves were ordered to pay close to $300,000 in victim restitution. Groves was sentenced to 15 years in prison in September of 2025 for her involvement. Laehn mentioned that Groves is currently appealing the jury trial conviction, but Graizer has provided sworn testimony under oath in his plea agreement about his involvement with her that can be used against her as evidence.

As per the plea agreement with Graizer, a Class C Felony for first degree criminal mischief and two Class D Felonies for conspiracy to commit a forcible felony were dismissed.
