A Perry woman was recently sentenced to probation for an incident that happened in Jefferson.

According to court documents, 36-year-old Ashleigh Messer pled guilty to an amended charge of a Class D Felony for second degree theft. She had a five year prison sentence suspended and was placed on probation for three years with the Iowa Department of Correctional Services.

The charge stems from an incident that happened on September 5, 2025 where a former Cobblestone Inn and Suites employee was checking guests into the hotel and attaching her email address to that guest in order to receive their hotel’s reward points. Court documents show that Messer admitted she would turn those points into gift cards and buy herself different things. Jefferson Police found out that since June of 2024, Messer had accumulated over $10,000.

Messer was also ordered to pay court costs, court-appointed attorney fees and victim restitution. As per the plea agreement, the original charge was a Class C Felony for first degree theft that was amended to the Class D Felony charge.
