Following several inches of snowfall across the Greene County area doesn’t necessarily mean ice has been built back up on bodies of water to enjoy one outdoor sport.
Greene County Conservation Director Tanner Scheuermann notes that there is no such thing as safe ice when it comes to determining whether or not it is safe to be out ice fishing, but that people are welcome to fish along the Raccoon River or at Spring Lake Park.
“We do keep our aerators on out there, (so) be obviously cautious of that. But yeah, we’ve got half a lake open right now and I would say that’s about the same for a lot of lakes. Yeah, there are folks out there, you know, they’ve put away the ice fishing gear for now and they’ve busted out the long rods again.”
Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Aron Arthur stresses the importance of dressing for the weather when fishing during the winter months and colder temperatures and always telling someone where and when you are going to be gone fishing in case an emergency happens.
