One federal lawmaker from Iowa is bringing honored guests to tomorrow night’s State of the Union Address.

Iowa’s Third Congressional District Representative Zach Nunn says the parents of Iowa National Guard Staff Sergeant Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, who was tragically killed during an attack in Syria on December 13th, are invited to watch President Donald Trump address the full US Congress. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio he is honored to have them as his guests tomorrow night.

“Gold star families here in Iowa bear a huge burden with the loss of a loved one. And so, I’m flying them out myself to Washington, D.C. to spend the State of the Union with me on Tuesday, and they’ll hear directly from the Commander-in-Chief, both in his vision for securing our country, but equally they’ll know this, that their son’s sacrifice will be forever be remembered by Iowans.”

Nunn talks about another way he is wanting to sustain Torres-Tovar and Staff Sergeant William Nathanial Howard, who was also killed in Syria on December 13th in the same attack.

“We’re also making sure that the sacrifice they’ve done is remembered here in Iowa. I’m very proud to be working with Senator Joni Ernst. We are leading the House resolution to rename our veterans hospital after these two sergeants who sacrificed so honorably and selflessly, so the rest of us could sleep soundly in our beds every night.”

If the resolution is enacted, Nunn says the Iowa National Guard Heroes Commemoration Act would rename the VA Clinic in Des Moines to the “Staff Sergeant Edgar Torres-Tovar Clinic” and the community-based outpatient clinic in Marshalltown would be designated as the “Staff Sergeant William Nathaniel Howard VA Clinic.” The State and the Union Address takes place tomorrow starting at 5:30pm central time.
