The Iowa House took the Senate proposition for State Supplemental Aid, put it up against their own proposition, and made a compromise for an amended version.
House Representative for District 23 Ray Sorensen says that they ended up with a number higher than what the Senate proposed, but lower than what the House originally wanted. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio the SSA always ends up as a compromise, this time moving to a two percent increase.
“The Senate generally comes in (with) very conservative numbers. The House, we tend to want to increase education funding every year, and so it’s kind of a back and forth battle that kind of happens behind the scenes. And then as we drop the bill, (it) starts becoming a little bit more clear where we’re at on those numbers.”
Sorensen mentions that this would raise per pupil funding from the state to about $8,148, and includes $7 million for paraeducator pay. He adds that they want to take a look at how funds are used. This is not the final version of the SSA bill, and will be going to the Senate for review.
