Caregivers can often overlook their own well-being while caring for loved ones and a Dallas County Health Department official gives tips on how they can maintain their health.
Community Educator Natalie Del Vecchio says caregivers can become so focused on meeting the needs of their loved ones that their own needs fall to the bottom of the list.
She adds that it’s also common for caregivers to put off their own health because the person they’re caring for may seem to need attention more urgently. Though Del Vecchio details that can lead to burnout stress and healthcare problems for the caregiver themselves.
“So that’s why it’s so important to remind the caregivers in our lives that taking care of themselves isn’t selfish. It’s essential and when caregivers are healthy and supported, they’re also better able to care for their loved ones.”
Del Vecchio explains that some of the steps caregivers can take to care for themselves include getting enough rest, eating regular meals, staying physically active and keeping up with their own medical appointments. She encourages caregivers to also pay attention to their mental health by talking to a trusted friend or joining a support group.
She adds that caregivers can also seek counseling to help reduce stress and feelings of isolation. Del Vecchio explains that various organizations offer free resources to support caregivers, including iowacaregivers.org and caregiveraction.org.
