An explosion south of Greenfield Thursday afternoon resulted in one death.

According to Adair County Sheriff Jeff Vandewater, the Adair County Communication Center was notified of an apparent explosion at 2597 Marion Avenue around 1:15pm. The Greenfield and Fontanelle Fire Departments, as well as the Adair County Sheriff’s Office and Adair County Ambulance were all dispatched to the scene. Vandewater mentions that upon arrival first responders located the body of 51 year old John Christensen, the sole occupant of the home, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vandewater explains that the exact cause of the explosion is undetermined and under investigation at this time, and that the assistance of the Iowa State Fire Marshall was requested. He adds that Christensen was transported to the Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny for autopsy. The Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Agency also assisted at the scene.
