DCG boys basketball is flying high after a dominating win over Ottumwa on Monday night. Now in the substate semifinals, the Mustangs ride to Johnston tonight to do battle with the Dragons.

In the regular season, Johnston was 13-8(8-8). They play their basketball in the Central Iowa Metro League, which has multiple teams in the postseason this year and three teams with 18 or more wins. They finished in fifth place in the conference, but still earned a bye in the first round of substate. Dragon junior Nicare Cavil is the team’s leading scorer at 16.5 ppg. Johnston’s last time out was at home against Council Bluffs Lincoln one week ago. They beat the Lynx 58-41, using their speed, quickness, and agility on defense, combined with timely shot-making from Cavil and company.

On Monday, DCG ended their home slate this year with a bang in the regional quarterfinals. They shot 70% from the field, 57% from three, and went 11/12 from the free throw line. Luke Lorenzen had 23 points to lead all scorers, but everybody got involved in the game. It was a fun 91-48 win last time, but tonight they have their work cut out for them.

These two teams are very similar in composition and play style, and their matching 13-win seasons reflect that. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm at Johnston High School. You can tune in on KDLS 99.7 FM, 1310 AM, and at raccoonvalleyradio.com.
