DCG boys basketball was in Johnston for the substate semifinal game last night and gave the Dragons everything they had, but came up just short. They fell 61-44 to end their season.
The first quarter started out with confining defense played by the Mustangs. Luke Lorenezen had multiple blocks in the frame and shut down what the Dragons wanted to do. Tino Daye was the only player to crack the code with an early eight.
In the second, the Mustangs pushed their advantage. Lorenzen had a couple of buckets and continued to patrol the paint with his long reach. Chase Perrin tried four triples and knocked down three of them while senior Hudson Heidgerken walked into a three of his own. Their lead was 26-20 at the half as Daye kept the Dragons close.
In the second half, it was all Johnston. The team’s leading scorer, Nicare Cavil, woke up from his slumber and proceeded to fill up the cup. He dropped 15 points in the third quarter and could not be stopped. He led the Dragons to outscore DCG 26-11 in the frame to trampoline them into a 46-37 lead going into the fourth.
In the final frame, Cavil and Daye were the dynamic duo they’ve been for the second half of the season. They ended their nights tied for the game lead with 19 points. In the end, the Mustangs just could not keep up with the scoring ability of those two, and their season came to an abrupt end at Johnston with a final score of 61-44.
