Mustangs girls basketball came out of the gates hot and didn’t look back on their way to a 59-39 win over Waverly-Shell Rock in the state quarterfinal round.
DCG dropped in a couple of early threes after winning the opening tip, courtesy of Macy Meyer and Leah Brauch, who hit two from downtown. In typical Mustang fashion, their defense complemented their offense perfectly as they held the Go-Hawks to take an 18-6 lead after one.
In the second quarter, WSR elevated their energy on defense, making it really tough for the Mustangs to get into their offensive set. Paisley Heidgerken and Ava Smid each had four in the frame as Meyer knocked in another triple to make it 30-13 at the half.
In the third, it was even in the scoring tally with each team scoring 11 points. Tessa Jones got involved with a three and Brauch hit another from beyond the arc. DCG pulled away in the fourth as Meyer had seven to finish with 17 to lead all scorers in the game as the Mustangs grounded the Go-Hawks in a 60-39 win.
The Mustangs move on to the state semifinals on Thursday, March 5th, at 5 pm in a rematch against the Norwalk Warriors. We’ll have the action on KDLS and raccoonvalleyradio.com.
