Mustangs girls basketball pulls off a preposterous comeback with six points in 10 seconds from Ava Smid off two turnovers from Norwalk’s inbounds passes. DCG wins, 47-42, in miraculous fashion to move on to the championship game.
The Warriors were on the warpath and ran out to a 12-0 run to open the semifinals, but the Mustangs weathered the storm and dropped in a few buckets of their own to swing momentum back in DCG’s favor to end the first quarter down 12-5.
In the second, the Mustangs calmed their nerves with all five starters and one reserve player scoring in the frame. DCG did not make a three-point bucket by the conclusion of the 1st half and struggled from the field against the stout defense of Norwalk, entering the half down 21-16.
In the third quarter, Ava Smid and Tessa Jones paved the path offensively. Smid had two field goals, and Jones knocked down the first triple of the ballgame, but the Mustangs were still down by three, 31-28, going into the last eight minutes.
Star sophomore Braylyn Birmingham turned it up in the final frame. She scored all eleven points for the Warriors, going 3-6 from the field and 4-4 from the line with one three-pointer. DCG didn’t give in and kept fighting, but with 50 seconds left, things were looking grim. Down by six, Smid drove down the lane to score in transition. On the inbound immediately afterwards, Birmingham traveled to turn it over. On the inbound play Leah Brauch fed Smid for an easy basket to put them down by four. Then, the miracle.
Smid stole the ball from Birmingham off Norwalk’s next inbound, and cashed in off glass to tie the game, and then she did it again, this time to take the lead. Ava Smid picked the Warriors’ pocket twice in a row to flip the game on its head and catapult the Mustangs to the state championship game.
DCG plays for the title Saturday, March 7th, at 2:30 pm against the Carlisle Wildcats. We’ll have coverage on KDLS and raccoonvalleyradio.com.
