The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Boys Basketball Team competed in the Iowa High School Athletic Association State Tournament Semifinals versus Storm Lake on Wednesday, winning 72-70 in double overtime to get to the championship game tomorrow against Ballard.

The Tigers got out the gates slower than usual, only scoring six points, while the Tornadoes captured 12 to lead by six at the end of the first quarter. However, ADM returned to form in the second quarter, outscoring Storm Lake 21-13 to take a 27-25 advantage into halftime.

The Tigers built their cushion up to five in the third quarter, but carried a 43-40 lead to the final eight minutes. The game would continue to go back and forth during the fourth quarter, as the Tornadoes were on the brink of victory, leading 58-56 with five seconds left. ADM had the ball and had to go to the length of the court, as senior Trey Bryte drove down on the left side of the basket and kissed the ball off the glass as time expired to tie the game 58-58, going into overtime.

After each team scored five points in the overtime, Bryte had a chance to win with 10 seconds, but was blocked at the rim to send the game into double overtime. About a minute into the second OT period, Storm Lake senior Jaidyn Coon, who finished with 36 points, fouled out. This seemed to spark the Tornadoes, as an ensuing three-pointer from junior Trey Boettcher and free-throw line jumper from senior Cameron Boyd gave Storm Lake a 70-66 lead with about a minute left.

The Tigers’ Bryte responded with an old fashioned three-point play, then would get fouled on a defensive rebound to put ADM up 72-70, and then the Tornadoes were unable to get off a shot in the final seconds, resulting in a Tigers’ 72-70 victory.

ADM was led by senior Hudson Lorensen’s 38 points, followed by Bryte, who had 15. Storm Lake’s Coon was the high player with 36 points, then it was Boyd with 18.

The Tornadoes end their season with a record of 24-3, while the Tigers improve to 24-2 on the year. ADM will now gear up to face off against Ballard in the Class 3A Championship Match tomorrow at 1pm from the Casey’s Center in Des Moines. Raccoon Valley Radio will carry the broadcast on K107.9 KKRF.
