A bill helping the Iowa Sexual Assault Forensic Exams (S.A.F.E.) Center advanced from the House to the Senate recently.
Representative for House District 23 Ray Sorensen says that House File 705 provides additional support for the program and victim services, especially in regards to forensic examinations used to collect evidence in the case of sexual assault or domestic violence. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio more about why the bill was introduced.
“These exams can be costly and they can require specialized medical professionals. And this bill helps ensure that those exams and victim services can be provided without placing the financial burden on the survivor. And why does this matter? The legislation strengthens support for victims and helps ensure that law enforcement and prosecutors have the evidence that they need to pursue justice.”
Sorensen mentions that the bill also reinforces the state’s commitment to supporting survivors in what is often one of the most difficult moments in their lives. He adds that the bill has advanced from the House to the Senate, and needs to be reviewed and advanced by the Senate before it can be considered by the governor.
