A bill from the House of Representatives continued to move through legislation during the second funnel week.

House District 23 Representative Ray Sorensen says that House File 2133 changes kratom from being an unclassified substance to a Schedule I substance, making it effectively illegal. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that he is against the bill.

“I don’t believe scheduling it as a Schedule I substance actually solves the problem. What it does is take something that’s currently unregulated and pushes it straight into the black market. That doesn’t make it safer. It actually makes it more dangerous.”

Sorensen mentions that many individuals use kratom responsibly to manage pain, and that this bill turns them into criminals overnight. He adds that the bill is in the Senate for consideration.
