A trio of Adel-DeSoto-Minburn seniors will wrap up their speech careers along-side the state’s best on Monday.
ADM’s Haley Nelson, Jaeley Doll and Julia Logue performed during the Iowa High School Speech Association State Individual Contest. Nelson’s Review piece takes a look at Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of “Little Women.” She says it was fun creating a visual aid through a slideshow and incorporating that with her spoken piece.
Doll’s Prose piece is from Rohl Dahl. She explains that the piece is a weird way of empowering women and it was fun to bring it all together.
Logue’s Storytelling piece is about a little boy who interacts with pirates while taking care of his sister. She enjoys getting to do fun voices for the pirates and the range between the characters.
Nelson describes her initial reaction when she learned she qualified for the All-State Festival.
“It kind of slipped my mind that the results were coming out that day. I was just sitting in my room and I got a text from my coach and then I went from 0 to 100. I was super excited, I sprinted upstairs to tell my parents and they were obviously very excited for me. It was just kind of funny because I went from not expecting it at all to realizing I had gotten this super big accomplishment and that was just so fun to experience.”
Doll says she was also excited when she heard the news that she qualified for All-State.
“I was like ‘oh my gosh, this can’t be real.’ I checked the page and I was there and I started tearing up, I was really happy. I didn’t start speech until my junior year, it was something very new for me. So being able to take this next step and see how far I’ve come since then, has just been very surreal for me.”
Logue describes what it means for her to make it to the All-State Festival.
“It just felt really special to me. This is something that I’ve really been looking forward to from my time in individual and large group speech and I’m really happy that I was able to make it this far.”
The ADM students will be traveling to the University of Northern Iowa this coming Monday to perform at the All-State Speech Festival.
