Severe Weather Awareness Week wraps up this week with a focus on flooding.

Dallas County Emergency Management Director AJ Seely says flooding is one of the most common and deadly hazards. He adds that flash flooding can happen quickly and alerts may be issued by the National Weather Service.

If an alert comes through, Seely details that residents should move to higher ground and should never walk or drive through floodwaters.

“We always say turn around, don’t drown. That’s really important, but unfortunately, not everybody follows it. You can’t always see the roadway underneath that two or three inches of water, or maybe it’s three feet of water. If the roadway is gone and you start driving down that path, that’s often a situation where people can run into issues. And so we re-emphasize that all the time, just a few inches of water can stall a vehicle and a foot can just sweep that vehicle away, so it doesn’t take much.”

Seely adds that drivers should never go around barricades as those are there for a reason.
