The nonprofit organization tasked with marketing and promoting the largest paved loop trail in the country will hold its annual banquet next weekend.
The Raccoon River Valley Trail Association (RRVTA) will hold the 20th Annual Fundraising Banquet at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 11 at Country Lane Lodge in Adel.
RRVTA Chair Pat Steele says the association will honor longtime Iowa journalist and community advocate Chuck Offenburger with its Trail Champion Award.
He adds that Offenburger is being recognized for his leadership, storytelling, and decades-long commitment to promoting Iowa communities, trails and quality-of-life initiatives. Steele details that his work has helped elevate awareness of the Raccoon River Valley Trail and similar projects across the state, contributing to their growth and lasting impact.
“Chuck Offenburger has been one of Iowa’s most influential storytellers and advocates for community life. His ability to shine a light on places like the Raccoon River Valley Trail has helped transform how people see trails—not just as recreation, but as powerful assets for economic development and community pride.”
He explains that the banquet will bring together business leaders, community partners and trail supporters to celebrate the impact of one of central Iowa’s most significant recreational and economic assets. The 89-mile Raccoon River Valley Trail, a Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame trail, connects 14 communities and generates measurable economic and health benefits across the region.
The evening will feature Matt Phippen, director of RAGBRAI, as keynote speaker, and will be emceed by Jason Sydejko, chief meteorologist at KCCI. The event also includes a live auction with items such as Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State football packages, Drake Relays tickets and other regional experiences.
Steele says proceeds from the event support ongoing trail promotion, partnerships and enhancements that strengthen local communities along the corridor. Tickets are available online by clicking here.
