One of the more common severe weather events is thunderstorms, and with spring having begun and summer approaching, they will only become more prevalent.
Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Jeremy Cooper says that one tip he follows and tells people, is don’t kid yourself, if you’re outside there’s nothing you can do to prevent being struck by lightning if there is a storm. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio how to get past this.
“The main thing to be aware of in lightning, is that if you can hear thunder, then you’re close enough that you could be struck by lightning. Probably the most important thing to do is getting indoors anytime you’re hearing thunder or if you’re seeing lightning. That’s truly your safest place.”
Cooper mentions that if you’re outdoors when there’s a thunderstorm, getting under a roof is the most important thing to do, but hopefully that structure is also sturdy and enclosed. He adds that in instances where this isn’t possible, like in many recreational areas, get in your vehicle, as it would be the next best place.
