Early next week, the Jefferson Water Department will be doing its bi-annual water main flushing across the whole town.
Public Works Director Dave Morlan says Monday through Wednesday, crews will be out flushing fire hydrants, with the schedule to begin on the north end of town and will proceed through town going south. He points out there are dead ends located throughout the city that can be where some of the areas that need these flushing the most to keep water moving in the system.
“Areas like that where you get some stagnant water from time to time, you want to flush that and get it going. We do run automatic flushers in certain areas of town just to keep that chlorine level up in the water from not going stagnant. But this is a great help to keep the water fresh.”
Morlan recommends residents follow along with when their water lines will be flushed and to not do laundry on that day. He explains that when water lines are flushed out, the rust that is in the lines is kicked up, which can cause white clothing to turn slightly brown. He suggests that if that happens, residents can contact the Water Department (515-386-2611) for a solution to help get rid of the rust color.
Morlan details that helping to do this kind of maintenance in the spring and fall prevents larger issues from happening as he describes one piece of good news going into the warmer months.
“We had a leak detection service in here. They cover the whole town (and) they listen for leaks if you will and surprisingly we didn’t have any leaks this spring, which is awesome!”
